Problem: Hurricane Ike with winds of 110 mph ripped off roof tiles. Tiles that remained on the roof were loose and posed a life-safety risk to pedestrians below.
Design Challenge: Consultants recommended a peel & stick roof underlayment to prevent wind driven rain from creating roof leaks.
An asphalt/modified bitumen underlayment failed due to poor lap adhesion and inability to wrap 2×4 battens
Solution: Sharkskin Ultra SA® underlayment was specified instead:
- Non-asphalt adhesive had excellent lap adhesion
- High tensile, flexible material wrapped battens tightly
- Project: Tile roof hurricane repair/ Tile reroof
Location: Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX
Consulting Team: Building Exterior Solutions
Contractor: Jones Roofing
Roof material: 2-Piece Ludowici clay tile
Roof Underlayment: Sharkskin Ultra SA®
Sharkskin Ultra SA® specified to reduce installation time, improve waterproofing, increase air sealing, and ensure long term protection
